Ditch the Razor…Choose the Laser!
Shaving? It’s a real drag.
Ingrown hairs. Nasty cases of razor burn. Constant shopping for shaving supplies. It all adds up to tons of frustration, time, and money…not to mention embarrassment when you miss a spot!
Luckily, there’s an alternative: lasers. Laser hair removal uses heat to cause damage to follicles, which prevents hair growth. The laser works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicle, so it won’t work on blonde, red, white, or grey hair—only the dark stuff.
Laser hair removal isn’t a one-and-done procedure. Hair grows in different phases, and laser hair removal only affects hair that is in the active growing phase. Generally, you need 5 to 6 treatments, and each treatment is done 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area being treated. While the hair doesn’t come out immediately—it takes a few weeks for it to start falling out—you’ll start noticing finer, thinner hair after just one treatment.
Here are some do’s and don’ts you need to know before your laser hair removal:
After your laser hair removal treatment, it’s common to be red, itchy, or have a little bit of mild swelling or red bumps. These last for a few hours up to possibly a few days. More serious risks include blistering, scarring, scabbing, hypo- or hyperpigmentation, infection, or burning of the skin. These risks increase if you go to a provider who is not properly trained.
There are very important factors to consider when performing a laser hair removal treatment, such as the patient’s skin type, hair color/density/diameter, recent sun exposure, medical history, and current medications. All of these things play a role in not only receiving an effective treatment, but also in preventing serious side effects that can often be permanent.
